Edge Lit 2

This weekend I went to Edge Lit 2 in Derby*. It was my first convention. I must admit I was quite excited about going and a little nervous. I’d heard good things but you never know if you’re going to fit in or not with new groups.

First off there were loads of lovely people. Everyone was friendly and it was nice to be in a crowd where it was people who hadn’t played D&D that were in the minority.

There were lots of panels to watch, workshops to attend, a dealers room, a quiz and the most edgy raffle I’ve ever seen.

It was great meeting twitter folk in the flesh and  getting to chat with writers whose books I’d read and enjoyed** as well as discover new ones*** who I’ll be adding to the reading list.

And of course I got to see Em do her thing (being awesome). Which was lovely.

A good time seemed to be had by all and now I’m even more excited about going to Nine Worlds in August. Hurrah!

*I also went and saw Pacific Rim but it’s way too soon for another rant.

**Anne Lyle! Adam Christopher! Jennifer Williams!

***Mike Carey! Adrian Tchaikovsky! Lou Morgan! Gav Thorpe!

  1. Mike Carey is fantastic, one of my favourite authors! =D

Very jealous if you met him. =)

I really enjoyed his Felix Castor series, but it's his comics I love. He's one of the best writers around in comics, in my opinion. Lucifer was excellent, and I highly recommend his current ongoing Vertigo title, The Unwritten – layers and layers of meta-fiction, both clever and fun.

(And, basically, I'd recommend anything he's written in between those two, as well, but those two particularly. =) )

    • I didn't meet him to chat but I did get to listen to him read and do a Q&A session. He read brilliantly and came across as very down to earth.

I'm keen to check out his comics and the Felix Castor series too!

  2. This all sounds splendid, Peter. And Mike Carey is a very talented fellow – I've been his enjoying his The Unwritten. I still think Icy Sedgwick is secretly in there.

Hopefully you'll come to the States for a WorldCon some day and we can cross paths!

    • Yeah, it was great. I've met folk that I think could become good friends in the future and generally had a really good time.

And yes! It'd be wonderful to meet up at a con one day.

  3. So, about this PACIFIC RIM thing. It'as never too late for another rant. Publish and be damned!!

Lovely blog, by the way 🙂
