Pete's 2016

2016 was weird. In terms of global and national news (which I'm not going to talk about here, I promise!) it was one of the worst I can remember and yet for me, personally and professionally, it was an excellent year.

Books that happened:

The Vagrant (US release)
The Vagrant (UK Paperback)
Landfall (Albion Online novel)
The Malice (UK Hardback)

A novellette that happened:

The Hammer and the Goat (ebook)

Other cool things:

This one! (Photo by Annie Czajkowski)

The Vagrant was shortlisted for a British Fantasy Award and it won the David Gemmell Morningstar Award for best newcomer! Which on its own was wonderful but also led to my favourite picture being taken.

I was also pretty chuffed about this:

(For The Vagrant)

And, those lovely folks at Harper Voyager picked up my new trilogy, The Deathless. The first book will appear sometime in 2018 and I will talk more about this in the future…

Mushy moment

People continued to be generally lovely throughout the year, in person and online. And given the things we're not talking about here, I wanted to say how important that was to me. Looking forward to spending more time with you all in 2017!

Landfall (The Tales of Albion) is out now!

bcff491efc804c6fcd706707d0fccc967b70ad2bAs the title says really! My fast and fun book set in the world of fantasy MMO Albion Online is now available in paperback and ebook.

UK folk can get it here.
Everyone else can get it here.

The novel stands on its own but for those who play the game, there are a few names and experiences I'm sure you'll find familiar.

As I've said before the cover art is great and there are lovely interior sketches too.  Like this one for example!

Landfall cover reveal!

And here it is, the cover for my novel set in the world of Albion Online. It’s called LANDFALL and the cover art is by Simon Kopp. I for one think he's done a great job!bcff491efc804c6fcd706707d0fccc967b70ad2b

One of the things I like the most are all the little details. The image generally has a nice epic feel to it but zoom in and you find cool things like this:

albion zoom in 1

There are sinister people in the woods!

And on the battlements!

And on the battlements too!

The cover was revealed over at the Albion Online website earlier today and the book will be available in paperback and ebook very, very soon! More details to follow!

Pete's 2015

I worry that these blog posts are a little like those filler episodes you get in TV shows, where the main characters all reminisce and we get a set of hashed together highlights of old material, usually to cover the writers being on holiday. But I quite like them! Not the filler episodes, they irritate the hell out of me, but posts like this, where we remind ourselves of some of the nice things that have happened because, sometimes, amidst all of the crazy it can be far too easy to forget our achievements.

Anyway, 2015. Blimey, what a year!  A bit of me can’t quite believe it’s (nearly) over. Here are some of the cool things that happened:

My book caIMG_0135me out! *screams*In April the hardback of The Vagrant entered the world and I had my very first book launch. It was splendid and all the people that came were super splendid.

-Actual people bought my book (thank you!), read it (amazing!) and some of them said nice things about it too (also amazing)!

I still can't quite believe this happened.

I still can't quite believe this happened.

-I also got to be part of Fantasy Faction’s Grim Gathering this year and that was amazing too!

-Tea and Jeopardy was nominated for a Hugo award for the second year running. We didn’t win (boo!) but we did come a respectable second. And, thanks to Worldbuilders, there are now Tea and Jeopardy t-shirts in existence!

Albion logo 2-I was commissioned to write the background for new fantasy MMO Albion Online and a full length fantasy novel set in their world! There’s more on that in the new year but if you’re interested, there’s info here, and a video of me being interviewed about it here.

-We celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary!*

-Those lovely people at Harper Voyager have signed me up to write a third Vagrant book (due out in 2017) and commissioned two short stories, also set in that world.

-I did a lot of travelling this year, loads of places in the UK but also: Dublin, Norway, Jeddah, Spain, Brussels and Berlin.

-I survived the Tea and Jeopardy Advent Calendar this year. And for those wondering, yes they did come back for me!

-Also, for those of you who have been helping Latimer to work out the charade for each episode, send your answers to Emma. There will be a little prize. 🙂

200-10-I finally watched Season 4 of Avatar: The Legend of Korra. If you don’t know why this is amazing, please go and watch Avatar: The Legend of Aang (Books 1, 2 and 3) immediately, then go and watch Korra (books 1-4) afterwards. I promise you won’t regret it.

Other highlights include: Daredevil, Dragon Age: Inquisition, D&D 5e, Steak, Family sized naan bread, various cocktails I can’t recall the names of but were very nice, meeting old friends, meeting Juliet’s kittens, and my new work chair!**

So there you go. 2015 was a pretty good year for me. 2016 is looking promising too, looking forward to seeing you there!

*Em has also had an incredible year but this post is all about me! If you’re interested in yet more reasons she’s fabulous, her post is here.

**The chair is very hard to describe without it sounding like a euphemism.

I'm writing for Albion Online!

*NEWS KLAXON*

I’m going to be writing a book for Albion Online.

For those of you who don’t know, Albion Online is a new fantasy MMO* coming out in early 2016 that puts the economy, the territory, pretty much everything actually, in the hands of the players.

It also features: Demons! Donkeys!** No character classes!*** Farming! The cutest rabbits ever digitised!**** Customisable housing! Cross platform play!*****

They’ve brought me in to do two things:

  1. to fill out the world, providing history and motivation to the various groups and to put names and faces to key characters.
  2. to write the tie-in novel.

In many ways this is my dream job as it combines most of my favourite things, namely: GMing, writing and gaming. Yes, for the first time in my life I can legitimately play a computer game for research purposes. 😀

More news coming soon!

If you’re interested in the game, you can check out their website for videos, forums and further info. You can even become a founder to get beta access and exclusive in game specials.

*Massively Multiplayer Online

**As mounts. There are lots of other options including (but not limited to) horses, oxen and giant wolves.

***In Albion you are what you wear, literally. This means you can switch between class on the fly, providing you have the kit. You can also mix and match: So you can be a wizard in plate or a warrior in robes, whatever you fancy.

****Probably

*****Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android all playing on the same server.
